    Abstract
In the algal reef ecological survey of 2022, we continued to investigate the species composition and seasonal changes of crustose coralline algae (= CCA) in the three major algal reefs in Taoyuan City. The six investigation sites in the three algal reef areas are three in Guanxin (Yong'an, Yongxing, Baosheng), two in Datan (G1, G2) and one in Baiyu. The species composition between the first (Jan-Feb), second (Mar-Apr), third (July) and fourth (Sep-Oct) investigations were slightly different. In total, 21 CCA species were recorded from the six sites in the three major algal reefs. Among the 6 investigation sites, Baosheng station was shown to have the highest CCA species (13 spp.), whereas G1 station in Datan algal reefs was shown to have the least species (8 spp.). Among the recorded 21 CCA species, Harveylithon sp. 1 and Sporolithon sp. 1 were the widest distributed species in the investigation sites. In the upper parts of the investigated sites, the Yongxin station in Guanxin algal reefs was shown to have the highest CCA average coverage (Apr, 41.4%±16.2%), whereas the G1 station in Datan algal reefs was shown to have the lowest CCA average coverage (Jul, 3.1%±4.1%). Except the two stations (Yongxin and Baiyu, appearing in spring, Apirl), the highest CCA average coverage mostly appeared in the winter (Jan-Feb) in the other stations. On the other hand, the lowest CCA average coverage appeared in the summer (July), except the lowest CCA coverage appeared in the fall (Sep-Oct) at Baosheng station. In Datan algal reef area, the CCA average coverages in the first two seasons (winter-24.2%±19.4% and spring-15.3%±12.7%) in G1 station were higher than those in G2 station (winter-19.0%±13.9% and spring-12.9%±12.9%), whereas the CCA average coverages of the summer (3.1%±4.1%) and fall (6.3%±7.8%) in G1 station were lower than those in G2 (summer-4.2%±4.3%; fall-7.9%±6.3%). This situation might be due to the influence of heavily accumulated sand, which were distributed in the G1 algal reefs. In the lower parts of the investigated algal reefs, the Yongxin station in Guanxin algal reefs was shown to have the highest CCA average coverage (Apr, 44.3%±24.8%), whereas the G1 station in Datan algal reefs was shown to have the lowest CCA average coverage (Jul, 6.7%±4.7%). For most investigation stations, the highest CCA average coverage appeared in the winter (Jan-Feb); however, the highest average coverage in Yongxin and Baiyu stations appeared in spring (Apr) and in fall (Sep-Oct), respectively. Nevertheless, the lowest CCA average coverage for all the investigation sites all appeared in the summer (Jul). In Datan algal reef area, the CCA average coverages of the first three seasons (winter, spring, summer) showed no obvious differences between G1 and G2 stations (the differences more or less than 1%), whereas the average coverage in fall at G2 station (increased around 7.1%) is much higher than that recorded at G1 station (increased 1.2%).
During 2019-2022, 27 CCA species in total were recorded from the six investigation sites19 species appeared in five stations (YA, YX, BS, G2 & G1), whereas 15 species were recorded in BY station. Among the recorded CCA species, 8 species were shown to be commonly found in the six investigations sites of Taoyuan algal reefs including Harveylithon sp.1, Sporolithon sp.1, Harveylithon rosea, Phymatolithon sp.3, Chamberlainium sp.2, Phymatolithon margoundulatus, Phymatolithon sp.4 and Crustaphytum pacificum in sequence. As to the seasonal changes of coverages during 2019-2022, in the upper parts of the investigated algal reefs, the highest CCA yearly average coverage was recorded in 2020, the second appeared in 2019 and 2022, and the lowest occurred in 2021. In the lower parts of the investigated algal reefs, the highest CCA yearly average coverage appeared in 2019, the second appeared in 2020 and 2022, and the lowest occurred in 2021.
In March of 2022, we also investigated the species composition and coverages of CCA in Xingfeng algal reefs (Hsinchu county). In 2022, the upper parts of the algal reefs were heavily covered by sands and some patched algal reefs dispersed in the mid-tidal zone. As a result, the CCA mean coverage was relatively lower (6.9%±13.5%) than that observed in the lower tidal zone (31.6%±27.4%). On the other hand, in the lower parts of the algal reefs, although the reefs were also covered by a mixture of accumulated sands and pebble stones, the CCA coverages in different spots were very variable ranging from 1% to 89%. In 2021 and 2022, only four CCA species were found in Xingfeng algal reefs, including three species of Phymatolithon (P. margoundulatus, Phymatolithon sp. 3 & Phymatolithon sp. 4) and one species of Chamberlainium (Chamberlainium sp. 2). In the lower tidal zone, the CCA mean coverage in 2022  (31.6%±27.4%) is higher than that recorded in 2021 (5.8%±8.7%). About the guided science of algal reefs in 2022, we updated the description of common CCA species found in Taoyuan algal reefs as well as adding general introduction for some species of invertebrates (not described in 2021) and fishes frequently seen in the algal reefs.
